World Championships 2010

Tuesday 23 March 2010

The Isle of Man competed at the World Championships last weekend in Dumfries, Scotland. Stephen Gale had the best championship of those competing from the Island but was unable to match his performance of 2 years ago.

Gale got off to the worst possible start with a 17-8 defeat to Belgium but came back well recording a 13-8 win over Scotland before beating Italy 12-4. His best performance came in the next game against the previously undefeated Swedish player, Dick Almen. Gale produced a great display to come away with a 15-7 win. Unfortunately the first day ended with another defeat, this time 14-10 to Andrew Evans from Wales. The second day Gale still had a chance of winning the group but had to beat Irleand and England and hope Sweden & Wales slipped up. Gale did his part with a final bowl victory over Ireland, 10-9 and then beating England 11-10. Unfortunately for Gale, Almen won both of his games and with Evans of Wales only losing one of his games left Gale agonisingly close to the play-offs, losing out on shot difference to Evans, tied on 10 points in second place and Almen topping the group with 11 points.

Other noteable results from the Manx team saw the pairs of Seamus Whelan & Moira Anderson beat Sweden 12-7. Jill Quayle, Clare Holland & Eric Maddocks also beat Sweden in the triples 13-8. In the fours, Chris Holland, Jesse Godhino, Sylvia Maddrell & Collin Holland beat Belgium 17-4 and Peter Coward, Rita Woodworth, John Jauncey & Ann Hollingworth had a 10-7 win over Belgium.
