Cherry Orchard League – Final Week

Douglas Bay Pirates wrapped up the Cherry Orchard League last Sunday after beating third place Colby Cosmos and pushing Ronaldsway Blockbusters down to second place.

With the Blockbusters having a bye in the final week, the Pirates knew they only needed a point to secure the title and made the best start possible with Josh Ffrench & Jayne Smith securing the pairs with a 16-6 win. Stephen Gale won his singles 20-2 but Cosmos fought back to end their impressive campaign in third place after Ann Hollingworth, Rita Woodworth & Pauline Kelly winning the triples 8-4.

Laxey Minors moved up to fourth place after beating Castletown Super Threes 7-0. David Cottier & Seamus Whelan won the pairs game 11-7 for the Minors before Whelan continued his impressive form with a 14-8 win in the singles. The Minors then completed an amazing comeback in the triples game winning 10-9 after being 9-1 behind and all this despite playing with only two players. The defeat meant Castletown slipped to sixth in table.

Ramsey Rebels managed to climb to fifth place with an emphatic 7-0 win over Ballaugh. Jill Quayle & Moira Anderson won the pairs 15-6 before John Jauncey added the singles with a 17-3 victory. The Rebels completed the game with a 13-8 win in the triples to secure the maximum points available.

The final standings are:
1. Douglas Bay Pirates – 34 points
2. Ronaldsway Blockbusters – 29
3. Colby Cosmos – 21
4. Laxey Minors – 20
5. Ramsey Rebels – 18
