Cherry Orchard League – Week 2

There were no clean sweeps in this weeks games.

League leaders Ronaldsway Blockbusters versus Colby started off well in the Singles with Collin Holland having a hard fought game with Matt Quayle winning 10-6, Chris Holland going to the last end against Ann Hollingworth 11-8, Seamus Whelan won 17-7 against new boy Bernard Kaighin. In the Triples on the last end with Blockbusters leading 6-5 Ann Hollingworth played length bowls to make it 7-6, with Ronaldsway winning the game 7-2.

In the game Douglas Destroyers against Laxey Minors, the Minors got their Singles off to a cracking start with Moira Anderson ( a name from the past ) winning 18-4, but Eddie Brew spoiled this by winning 14-9. the game between Harry Minor and Jill Quayle ( another  oldie ) went a lot closer with Harry edging it 10-8. In the Triples game Douglas tying on the last end counted 4 to make it 8-4. The bonus point went to Laxey with having more chalks but Douglas took the overall game 6-3.

The game against Douglas Bay Pirates and Ballaugh ‘A’ with Stephen Gale playing short mat bowls in the European Masters Championships in Belgium Jayne Smith was drafted in to play for Douglas, and won her game  11-7, in the next Singles Eric Maddocks ( another blast from the past ) played Dave McTaggart this was a cracking game with it all square on the last end Eric squeezed in 2 bowls to win 12-10. In his game Michael Collister won 16-6. In the Triples Ballaugh ‘A’ played well to win convincingly 11-4 but lost overall 7-2.

Erin Elite versus Ballaugh ‘B’, Ballaugh stated well with Mike Buckeridge winning 11-7, Steve Durcan for Erin was in no mood to go easy in his game winning 17-6 and his father Bernie bettered this by winning 18-4. The Triples was no easy ride for Erin who were 6-5 down on the last end but with 2 bowls counting won 7-6.

Next Sunday sees a new format of a 4 Bowls Singles Open which has been handicapped by Stephen Gale and what we hope will be a popular event, with another one being held in February.
