Gale takes singles crown

Stephen Gale took the 4 Bowl Singles title last Sunday at the NSC after beating Eddie Brew 17-5 in the final.

Gale started the day in fine form, defeating Archie Collister 18-3. Last year’s champion Michael Collister beat Sylvia Maddrell 11-8 and David Cottier record a 13-9 win over Seamus Whelan. 2011′s winner Josh Ffrench had an excellent 16-9 win against Chris Holland after he had beaten Collin Holland 13-11 in the prelims. Eddie Brew’s road to the final started with a convincing 18-2 win over James Teare. Wyn Collister also recorded a healthy victory beating Matt Quayle 18-6. Ann Hollngworth came through a tough first round game 10-8 against Bernie Durcan while Steven Durcan beat Georgina Moore 12-3.

The second round saw Gale take on David Cottier and despite a brief fight back by Cottier, Gale ran out a 15-6 winner. Josh Ffrench produced a brilliant performance to beat Michael Collister 14-4 to set-up a repeat of the 2011 final against Gale. Eddie Brew continued his run with a 14-3 win over Wyn Collister while Ann Hollingworth defeated Steven Durcan 18-7.

The semi-finals both saw the eventual finalists produce stunning displays of bowls with Gale defeating Ffrench 15-5 while Brew got to his second singles final in a row with a 20-2 victory over Ann Hollingworth.

The final saw Gale take control early on with an 8-0 lead after 4 ends and stretching that to 10-1 at the half-way stage of 6 ends eventually completing the victory 17-5 to become champion for the 4th time in this competition.

Next the Isle of Man team travels to Cardiff to compete in the World Short Mat Championships.
