Douglas Bay Pirates move to the top in Cherry Orchard League

Reigning champions Douglas Bay Pirates produced a table topping performance last Sunday in the Cherry Orchard League as they beat Ballaugh 9-0 to take top spot.

The match started with newcomer Tom Kelly recording his first singles victory for the Pirates, coming from behind to beat Richard Faragher 11-10 on the final end. Michael Collister beat Ballaugh debutante David Hewitt 11-8 before Stephen Gale beat Ann Gale 13-7. The triples saw the Pirates run away with a 17-1 victory to claim the maximum number of points after Ronaldsway Blockbusters slipped up against Erin Elite.

Chris Holland got the Blockbusters off to a great start with a 24-1 victory over Sheila Durcan but Bernie Durcan leveled the game a 12-9 win over Collin Holland before Steve Durcan won 10-7 over Seamus Whelan for the Port Erin side. Erin Elite looked to be taking the triples as well before Chris Holland produced a magical bowl to claim 2 points on the final end to level the game 9-9. Blockbusters managed to claim the bonus point but couldn’t stop Erin Elite finishing as 5-4 victors.

Laxey Minors stay third after a 5-4 victory over Douglas Destroyers. Laxey captain David Cottier continues his good form with a 17-6 win over James Teare but Eddie Brew won 14-7 against Wyn Collister for the Douglas side. Archie Collister won his singles game 12-4 over Harry Minor to put Laxey back ahead. Douglas Destroyers managed to win the triples 9-8 but the superior shot difference game the bonus point to Laxey.

Douglas Townies go fourth after a 7-2 win over Colby. Ann Hollingworth got Colby’s only points with a 19-4 win over Eric Maddocks. Heather Maddocks hit back for the Townies though with a 14-8 win over Rita Woodworth before Bernie Kaighin won 15-6 against Stephen Bradley. The triples saw the Douglas side run out 10-3 winners to claim an impressive 7-2 victory.
