Ronaldsway Blockbusters stayed top of the Cherry Orchard League last Sunday but their chances of winning the title look over after playing their last game of the season.
It was a poor start for the Blockbusters who lost their opening pairs game against Castletown Super Threes duo Matt Quayle & Peter Blower. Chris Holland fought back for the leaders though with a superb 21-0 win her singles, but Matt Quayle & Peter Blower, with help from Sylvia Maddrell took the final triples game 7-5 to secure a 4-3 win for the Castletown side.
Douglas Bay Pirates moved level on points at the top of the table after beating Laxey Minors 5-2. Josh Ffrench & Jayne Smith won the pairs for the Pirates with a 10-8 win but Seamus Whelan leveled the match for Laxey with a 10-9 victory in the singles before the Pirates took control in the triples running out 13-2 winners. With Ronaldsway Blockbusters having a bye in the final week, the Pirates now only need a single point from their last match to secure the title.
Colby Cosmos continued to impress and give themselves some breathing space in third place after beating Ramsey Rebels 6-1. Ann Hollingworth & Pauline Kelly won the opening pairs game 10-9 before Rita Woodworth increased their lead with a 12-6 singles victory. Ramsey regrouped well and managed to draw the final triples game 9-9 which lifted them off the bottom of the table.
With one week to go the table is as follows:
1. Ronaldsway Blockbusters – 29 points
2. Douglas Bay Pirates – 29
3. Colby Cosmos – 19
4. Castletown Super Threes – 15
5. Laxey Minors – 13
6. Ramsey Rebels – 11
7. Ballaugh – 10
Next week is the 4 Bowl Singles competition and Stephen Gale will be looking for his fourth consecutive win the event.
