Champions successfully defend their triples title

Seamus Whelan, Chris Holland & Collin Holland successfully defended their title in the Ann Hollingworth Triples after beating Sheila, Bernie & Steve Durcan 13-3 in the final last Sunday at the NSC.

Collin Holland’s triples were in fine form throughout the day, starting odd with a 12-5 victory over David Cottier, Archie Collister & Wyn Collister to move into the semi-finals. The Durcan’s had an impressive last gasp win in their first game, taking a 3 on the final end to beat Jill Quayle, Maureen Trustham & Richard Faragher 10-9. Elsewhere Bernie Kaighin, Ann Hollingworth & Sylvia Maddrell ended Eric Maddocks, Michael Collister & Stephen Gale’s hopes with a 10-3 victory.

Holland’s triples faces James Teare, Harry Minor & Jayne Smith in the semi-finals after they had received a bye in the opening round. Holland’s side were once again in dominant form as they came out 10-3 victors to move into the final. The Durcan’s joined them in the final after dispatching Sylvia Maddrell’s side with an excellent 11-2 victory.

The final was not as one sided as the score suggested as the Durcan’s were level at 3-3 after 3 ends. Holland’s side edged into a 7-3 lead with two ends to go which forced Steve Durcan to try an ambitious shot to try and close the deficit on the penultimate end which he missed by a whiskerwhich left them needing a maximum of 6 on the last end to force a draw. Unfortunately for them Holland’s side closed out impressively, finishing 13-3 victors and claiming the title for a second year running.

Next week sees the conclusion of the Peter Coward Pairs League with Michael Collister & Stephen Gale going head to head with Steve & Bernie Durcan for the title with Eddie Brew & Harry Minor back in third place. Entries are also open for the 4 Bowl Singles which is the last competition of the season on the 8th March. Anyone wishing to enter should contact Stephen Gale on 462424.
