Port Erin stage comeback to beat Douglas Sharks

Port Erin top the Haldane Fisher Fours League after beating Douglas Sharks 11-6 last Sunday at the NSC.

It started well for the Sharks with Matthew Keggen & Richard Faragher winning the opening game of pairs, and despite being a player short Stephen Gale beat Wyn & Archie Collister 8-7. Port Erin soon started the fightback with Wyn Collister winning her singles 13-4 and Archie Collister adding his singles with a 18-4 victory. Stephen Gale managed to get the Sharks only singles win with a 19-1 victory before Bernie Durcan leveled the game with a 13-2 win in the final singles. Port Erin really found the form in the final game of fours ending up convincing 14-1 victors ensuring they would top the table after match day one.

The other game of the day saw the reigning champions Ronaldsway Rockets beat Colby Cosmos. The champions had to fight for the win though with Ann Gale & Christine Holland winning the opening pairs for the Rockets 11-7 only for Matt Quayle & Sylvia Maddrell to level things up taking their pairs game 12-7. The singles were also evenly shared with Ann Gale & Christine Holland both winning their games 9-6 and 18-1 respectively but Ann Hollingworth won her game 12-4 and Sylvia Maddrell won 15-5 for the Cosmos to ensure the match went to the final game of fours and it was the Rockets who came out on top, winning 13-4.

Next week sees a return to the Cherry Orchard League with Laxey Minors playing the Douglas Bay Pirates, Peel Musketeers face Port Erin New Kids, Ronaldsway Blockbusters will come up against Andreas and Colby Cosmos will play Ballaugh. Meanwhile Stephen Gale will be playing in the European Masters in Belgium on the Short Mat Players Tour.
