Collister & Gale claim 4 Bowl Pairs title in dominant fashion

Michael Collister & Stephen Gale won the 4 Bowl Pairs last Sunday at the NSC after defeating Seamus Whelan & Collin Holland 17-4 in the final.

The day started with the eventual champions being drawn against newcomer Linsey Durcan & James Teare and after a run of 4 ends of scoring 17 points without reply they ran out 25-2 winners. Whelan & Holland had a tough first round match against Eric Maddocks & Sylvia Maddrell and found themselves trailing 6-0 after 3 ends but fought back to level things at 7-7 with 1 end to play. Maddrell tried to take the jack with her last wood but instead clipped it over to Whelan’s bowl, leaving them lying shot & game.

Elsewhere Chris Holland & Jayne Smith came through 13-2 against Matt Quayle & Bernard Kaighin while Stephen Bradley & Richard Faragher scored a 7 on the penultimate end against Steve & Bernie Durcan to win 11-9.

The semi-finals saw Collister & Gale face Smith & Holland and found themselves 7-5 down with 3 ends to play. A 5 on the next but them back in control however, and eventually came through 13-7 to move into the final. Bradley & Faragher couldn’t repeat the heroics of their first round match against Whelan & Holland after conceding scores of 5 & a 7 throughout the game, losing 21-2.

Collister & Gale got off to a good start in the final, scoring two 3’s in the opening three ends to lead 6-1. Whelan & Holland came back in the fourth with a 3 of their own but Collister & Gale then went on the attack, scoring a 5 on the fifth end to lead 11-4, then managing the game well, scored 2 on each of the next three ends to win with a comfortable 17-4 victory.

Next week sees a return to the Cherry Orchard League with leaders Douglas Bay Pirates facing bottom side Ballaugh B. Ronaldsway Blockbusters play Ballaugh while Douglas Destoryers meet Colby and Laxey Minors come up against Erin Elite.
